Vintages Wine Picks January 23, 2010

White Wine

Balbach Estate Kabinett Riesling 2008, Q,M.P., Niersteiner Pettenthal, Rheinhessen, Germany: Vintages Wine Panel: The Balbach Estate is Fritz Hasselbach’s (you know, of Gunderloch fame) other winery. Here he creates some equally exciting Rieslings. In this case, it features aromas of ripe peach, citrus, mineral and a touch of petrol. Just off-dry with an ideal balance between the fruit and acid. A great sipper or enjoy it with a variety of simply cooked seafood (spicy or not). My note: A brisk and refreshing white with stimulating notes of lime, white grapefruit and lemon. Needs no coaxing out of the glass: this wine will meet you more than half way. 148825 11.80% MD 750 mL  $16.95 Score: 88/100. January 23, 2010 Full Review Add to: Shopping List Cellar

Red Wine

Alamos The Wines Of Catena Malbec 2008, Mendoza, Argentina: Loads of ripe dark plums up front, with cassis at the mid-palate and a violet-infused finish. Some pepper and rose petal notes in the background. This wine was aged for 9 months in American and French oak. Terrific quaffer! 467951 13.50% D 750 mL  $13.95 Score: 89/100.
