Cheval Noir 2012, Bordeaux Aoc, France: This value-priced Merlot comes from the heart of the Bordeaux region. It's savoury with aromas of tart blackcurrant and cassis. The Mahler-Besse family has been producing wines here since 1895. The name derives from a powerful black horse that worked in the vineyards in the 19th century. Chateau De Nages Costiéres De Nîmes 2011, Rhône A.C., France: Robust and tannic so decant 2 hours or give it some cellar time. brought to us by R. Gassier Proprietor, this wine has richly concentrated flavours of wild blackberry and currants. A splash of Mourvèdre grapes in the blend lends the wine a terrific velvet mouth-feel. Lan Gran Reserva Tempranillo 2007, Rioja D.O.C.A., Spain: Subtle and complex with aromas of cigar box, leather, violets and black cherry. Full-bodied and mouth-watering. Love the taste and feel of maturity in this wine. Drinking well now though will also keep in the cellar for a few years. This full-bodied red wine is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano grapes grown on 20- to 25-year-old vines. Pair with veal. Laughing Stock Blind Trust Red 2011, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia BC V.Q.A., Canada: A spectacular Okanagan blend of Bordeaux grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. You can find out the exact proportions of each when you remove the capsule... no peaking until you and your dinner companions guess! Gorgeously ripe aromas of blackberries and cassis wrapped in a luxuriously long smoky blanket. One for the cellar. This winery was started by a husband and wife team who had been in the finance industry, thus Laughing Stock is a play on the stock market, and blind trust ... well, you get the picture. Tenuta Sant'Antonio Monti Garbi Ripasso Valpolicella Superiore 2011, Veneto D.O.C., Italy: Extremely tasty and mouth-awakening, with vibrant flavours of cherry and mocha. Full-bodied and lip-smacking delicious. This wine is made using the Ripasso method that dries the grapes before fermenting them to concentrate and deepen the flavours and richness of the wine. Finishes with black plum, dried fig and bacon, yes bacon. Yum! Pair with other pork dishes like some chops. Wakefield Winery Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Clare Valley, South Australia, Australia: A box office hit at the liquor store! This robust red wine at a great price offers tremendous value and bang for your buck. Attractive aromas of mint and blackberry on the nose. Juicy, full-bodied, rich and delicious on the palate. Wakefield is known for producing wines of outstanding value and quality. This is no exception. This particular vintage of this wine has been awarded several honours in the value-priced wine category for a number of international competitions. It finishes nicely with black plum, espresso and cloves. Black in hue with aromas to match of dark fruit, tar and smoky oak. Dark spices on the finish. Great bang for your buck.
