Monte Faustino Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2007, D.O.C., Veneto, Italy: Broker a deal between competing motorcycle gangs with this robust red. It's the only way to make them all fall silent and agree on something. Rich robust flavours of fleshy black plums and blackberries, liqueur-like concentration, though it's a dry wine. Good dark spice and signed contracts on the finish. I've also recommended robust Italian reds under $20 in this release, as well as terrific cabernet, shiraz and malbec from California, Australia and Argentina. Taja Reserva Mähler-Besse Monastrell 2009, D.O., Jumilla, Spain: A robust, tasty red for quaffing not analyzing. Dark fruit aromas and some oak. This wine is made mostly from the Monastrell (Mourvèdre) grape with some Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. It's aged for about a year in oak. Perfect for movie night. Food pairings: pizza, pasta. Goats do Roam The Goatfather 2011, Wo Coastal Region, South Africa: Juicy purple and black plum aromas with dark spice. Happy, straight-up pleasure in a glass. Full-bodied, but not heavy. This wine is a non-traditional blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Barbera and Nebbiolo grapes. Some terrific notes of cherry and blackberry on the finish. Villa Tonino Grillo 2010, I.G.T., Sicily, Italy: Floral on the nose with a steely dry finish on the palate. If you love Torrontes from Argentina, try this: slightly dried but it has that seductive floral signature. This is a terrific, mouth-watering aperitif with dry lemon notes.
