Burrowing Owl Estate Winery Pinot Gris 2007, V.Q.A., Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada: Vintages Wine Panel: Pinot Gris is becoming a staple in the vineyards of the Okanagan, resulting in a range of styles from light and crisp to ripe, round and robust. This fine example from Burrowing Owl comes right up the middle. It features aromas of lime, pear, mineral and even a slight hint of butterscotch. On the palate, it is quite dry with good lime/pear replays and a hint of toasty oak. This version has good weight in the mouth and a rather long crisp/fruit/oak finish. Burrowing Owl Estate Winery Chardonnay 2007, V.Q.A., Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada: Stunningly, crazy great! I love this Chardonnay: rich layers of buttery, hazelnut goodness lap over your mouth followed by warm, fleshy pears and clementine. A smoky, peach-infused finish. I’ll stay here and finish the bottle: you go on without me.  726604  13.50%  XD  750 mL  $33.95  Score: 92/100. October 10, 2009

Château Le Pavillon De Boyrein Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2007, A.C., Graves, Bordeaux, France: Vintages Wine Panel: White Bordeaux is under-appreciated for its food-matching qualities. Here’s a racy 2007 Bordeaux blanc with lovely melon, apple and sweet herb aromas on the nose. Dry, crisp and fresh with good aroma replays. A great wine. Dry and fresh with good aroma replays. My note: A balanced and refreshing sauvignon blanc that’s not overly herbal or oaked. A lovely balanced approach with tasty notes of lime, green apple and chives.  140525  12.50%  XD  750 mL  $22.95  Score: 88/100. October 10, 2009

Schloss Reinhartshausen Riesling Spätlese 2007, Q.M.P., Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Rheingau, Germany: Vintages Wine Panel: The Schloss Reinhartshausen estate, in the heart of the Rheingau, overlooks the Rhine river. Wine has been cultivated on this historic 77 ha estate since 1337. This house Spätlese (or late harvest) Riesling, made with fruit from the Erbach and Hattenheim vineyards, is rich and supple with lovely lemon/lime, ripe grapefruit and mineral characteristics. It’s medium-sweet, balanced with refreshing acidity leading to a long tangy finish. Cellar for 5 to 10 years. My note: terrific concentration in this medium-bodied white with absolutely lip-smacking delicious of ripe pear, peach and apricot. A touch of sweetness makes it incredibility versatile food-wise.  129536  9.50%  MS  750 mL  $23.95  Score: 90/100. October 10, 2009

Collalto Pinot Grigio 2008, I.G.T., delle Venezie, Veneto, Italy: Vintages Wine Panel: With more than a thousand years of family winemaking tradition, current owner Princess Isabella Collato de Croÿ has a legacy to uphold with her estate’s wines. This wine shows that the legacy is in very capable hands. Very pale straw in color, this PG displays floral, lime, pear and yellow plum aromas. It’s dry, medium-bodied with a soft texture and good depth of sweet citrus and orchard fruit flavors balanced by vibrant acidity. A shade more complex than most, this Grigio is refreshing on its own. My note: Lovely refreshment with notes of white melon, pink grapefruit and green apples. No heavy oak. Zesty and mouth-watering. Great aperitif.  135590  13%  XD  750 mL  $18.95  Score: 89/100. Bollini Pinot Grigio 2008, D.O.C., Trentino, Italy: Vintages Wine Panel: ‘Natura & Passione’ have been Neil and Maria Empson’s guiding principles since the creation of the ‘Bollini’ line of wines in 1979. The Empsons continue to strive to find the ultimate expression of the best fruit from the most suitable vineyards. They ‘intrude’ as little as possible to ensure that the final wine is a true reflection of the place where it was grown. This is a fresh, versatile, citrus- and melon-scented wine. My note: A zesty, zingy Pinot Grigio with notes of lime and green apple with a fresh, clean finish.  951319  13.50%  XD  750 mL  $16.95  Score: 87/100. October 10, 2009

Falchini Vernaccia 2008, D.O.C.G., Tuscany, Italy: “Vernaccia di San Gimignano is Tuscany’s premier white wine. It comes from the famous and ancient village of San Gimignano whose renaissance towers (one was measured by the height of one’s tower, so to speak) were the skyscrapers of their day. The wine is made from a local grape called Vernaccia and tends to be soft and full with pleasant complimentary acidity.” (www.tastings.com) Falchini estate’s 2008 version is crisp, dry and aromatic, with ripe citrus character. My note: Pleasantly refreshing and vibrant. White melon, lime, grapefruit and green apple. Great aperitif.  994012  12.50%  XD  750 mL  $15.95  Score: 87/100. October 10, 2009

Volpaia Citto Sangiovese Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, I.G.T., Tuscany, Italy: Vintages Wine Panel: Volpaia’s Citto is a blend of Sangiovese with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon to add depth to the flavours. Tenuta Di Capraia Chianti Classico 2006, D.O.C.G., Tuscany, Italy: Vintages Wine Panel: A Chianti Classico that gains intensity as it progresses. On the palate, all these elements come back for an encore. It is dry, full-bodied, fresh and very lively. It will reward 2-4 years in a cellar, but is also a good match for an array of meat-based dishes. There’s simply nothing like it: light effervescence, orange zest and Clementine, slight sweetness and eternal happiness.  134833  5.50%  MS  750 mL  $16.95  Score: 91/100. Nino Franco Prosecco, D.O.C., Veneto, Italy: Vintages Wine Panel: In the early 1930s, Harry’s Bar opened in Venice. It became a legend when they developed the classic sparkling wine cocktail, Bellini. Mix ¼ cup (50 mL) chilled peach purée with 2/3 cup (150 mL) well-chilled Prosecco di Valdobbiadene. Put purée in chilled glass, top up with Prosecco, stir and serve immediately. My note: A lovely bubbly at a terrific price. Toasty goodness with some bright tree fruit notes of green apples and Asian pear.  349662  11%  XD  750 mL  $18.95  Score: 88/100. October 10, 2009 Best Value Sparkling Wine.

Belcanto Di Bellussi Di Valdobbiadene Prosecco, D.O.C., Veneto, Italy: Vintages Wine Panel: With next year’s releases, Prosecco di Valdobbiadene will be elevated from DOC to the higher DOCG designation. As a result, the zone will be more tightly demarcated, the yields will be slightly reduced and the rules will prevent any other region from using Prosecco in their name. My note: A pleasant, zesty bubbly with toasty goodness and notes of green apples and limes.  53215  11.50%  XD  750 mL  $17.95  Score: 88/100. October 10, 2009
