Tasting note:

Stupendous depth and length: why can’t all Californian Chardonnays be like this? Okay I guess that might cut down on diversity but oh la la this is terrific. Aromas of ripe peaches, pears, hazelnut, cedar smoke and vanilla spice.

Opinions about wine differ greatly as the experience is subjective. You may find it helpful to compare this critical evaluation of the wine with mine as well as your own:
Pleasing aromas of pear, mango and clove along with a hint of vanilla mingle on the nose of this classic Sonoma County Chardonnay. The well-balanced acidity wraps around a luscious core of pineapple, lemon and melon flavors and creates a creamy palate. The wine has a refreshing finish.

—Margo Van Staaveren, Winemaker

The Sonoma County Chardonnay showcases fruit from all over the county but, year after year, the Robert Young Vineyard in Alexander Valley makes a significant contribution to the final blend. For the 2007 Chardonnay, grapes were also selected from Carneros, Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Sonoma Valley. These are dynamic growing regions that offer a new set of variables with each vintage. With Chateau St. Jean’s Sonoma County wines, we look to make the most of these variables, seeking the best expression of Chardonnay from a particular vintage.

Classic winemaking techniques including barrel fermentation and five months of sur lie aging in small French, American and Hungarian oak barrels impart richness and complexity to the wine. Approximately 60% of the blend underwent malolactic fermentation.
