Exceptional from start to finish. Still tarry and young, needing cellar time, but it's smokin' hot already. Stonewell selects its exceptional fruit from a sub-region of the western Barossa Valley, from vines that were planted in 1885, the oldest in the region. The 2012 vintage is a powerful one that has a long life ahead of it.

Reviews and Ratings

Jon Steeves - Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Deep inky ruby red, 14.5% ABV. Complex, structured, youthful. Drinking exceptionally well and promising more with further bottle aging. The fruit was sourced from extremely low yielding old vines Barossa Shiraz. Deeply concentrated blackberry, dark plum, anise, dark chocolate. Fine and firm youthful tannins, great acidity. An elegant wine, tasted great on it's own and paired exceptionally well with braised lamb tacos, braised beef, aged cheese. @jonsteeves rated 92/100 - tasted May 2016
Pamela Chiles rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Inky dark and brooding - a younger version of the 2010 with the tannins to prove it, huge, puckering, but so very fine and silky. Classic black berries, black licorice, cocoa, and a hint of spice wound in and around those tannins - give this bruiser 5 to 10 years if you can wait, or drink now with the best fat-marbled steak you can find.
Emilie Ryan rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A younger Stonewell vintage with nice, fruity notes …
Presentation: Classy, distinctive, and elegant
Appearance: Very dark ruby
Nose: Dark fruit, violets, leather
Taste: Dark fruit, tannins, charcoal, violet, black licorice
Finish: Soft, long, fine tannins.
Overall impression: A great, fruit and terroir Shiraz. It is apparently still aging in barrel, so should be even better when released.
Value: 3/5
Monique Sosa - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Another signature vintage of the Stonewell Shiraz! The 2012 vintage shows overpowering tannin notes that will attribute to this wine's longevity. The nose shows ripe black plums and cassis, leather, dark chocolate, anise, graphite and cloves. The palate is showing equally divine dark fruit notes with high concentrations of tannins and acidity. This wine is quite youthful and has tremendous potential for ageing. I foresee this wine drinking well into 2022-2025.
