What a towering, blockbuster, benchmark Barossa Shiraz. Wow. Textbook fine tannins, concentrated dark fruit flavours. Notes of graphite and violets on the mid-palate. This could use serious cellar time, if you can restrain yourself to wait.

Move over Penfolds Grange... I've fell in love with my new fave Barossa Shiraz. This wine is simply amazing. Complex, structured, youthful and promising more. Admittedly tasted 10 years early, and yet is drinking exceptionally well and promising more with further bottle aging. The fruit was sourced from extremely low yielding old vines Barossa Shiraz. 14% ABV, deeply concentrated fruit, fine and firm graphite tannins, great acidity, ripe black and blue fruit, anise, dark chocolate and dried fig. On first taste, this wine appeared appasimento style, similar to a richly concentrated Amarone. Rich and elegant, this wine is great on it's own and is structured to complement rich braised beef dishes, aged cheese platters with perfection. @jonsteeves rated 94/100 - tasted May 2016

Outstanding! This wine shows pronounced ripe black berry fruit, dark plum, tobacco leaf, anise, vanilla bean and cocoa; which evolved to showing dried fruits, baking spice and graphite minerality. The palate reflects these intense notes, with ripe medium-full tannins, medium+ acidity and a long minted cocoa finish. This is the showcase wine of Peter Lehmann Wines. It is sourced from highly selective low yielding old vines and it stands up to its legacy! It has body, powerful fruit concentration, complexity, longevity and personifies the one of the finest quality Shiraz of the Barossa terroir. Enjoy now - after decanting for 1-2 hours - with a rich steak dinner, or leave it to age for another 5-7 years. Tasted May 2016. @sommsosa @bespoketastings

Wow, this is Barossa at its very best! Stonewell Shiraz is the best wine of each vintage vinified with fruit from the Stonewell vineyards, one of the best Shiraz sites in the world. Fleshy, powerful and masculine with great complexity, tons of ripe black fruit and plenty of weight, leading to a chewy, cedar-toned finish. In the Barossa valley there’s a sub-region that many believe to be the home of the best shiraz vines. That area is the Stonewell district. From a dozen small vineyards with plantings from 1885, Lehmann selects the best grapes to make a muscular rendition of the archetypical big Aussie Shiraz. Some of these plots surround the luxury resort known as the Louise. Inky dark red with a crimson rim. A massive nose with plenty of blackberry, dark plums, chocolate and anise. The flavours develop dance on the tongue with notes of dark plums, figs and chocolate. The tannins are rich and dusty and rather flinty. The finish is persistent and comes in waves of fruit and subtle oak essence.

Wild boar ragout would definitely be a match but anything barbequed and rich would be a perfect partner for this wine.

So incredibly inky-black with a tinge of red - very impressive in the glass. Grapes are sourced from the oldest and lowest-yield vineyards in the Barossa, some are 130 years old! This is a big, powerful Shiraz that is meant to age - the tannins are huge and drying but very fine (winemaker Ian calls them "graphitic" - they are like licking slate, trust me), the intense black fruit is there simmering and waiting, along with bitter dark chocolate/cocoa, licorice/anise and leather. Fabulous.

An outstanding wine with plum and cigar box on the nose and the palate offering plums, tobacco, chocolate and a hint of spice. The finish is long and soft and offers soft graphite tannins.

An interesting Shiraz sourced from select growers, including one who brings 18 buckets of grapes…
Presentation: Classic, classy, distinctive, and elegant
Appearance: Very dark – still no orange tinge that I could see, despite it being 6-years-old
Nose: Leather, dark fruit
Taste: Charcoal, round, soft tannins, plums, violets, earth
Finish: Very long finish. Round tannins and graphite
Overall impression: Drink by itself or with cheese or dark chocolate. Can also be paired with meat or grilled vegetable dishes. You should probably try to cellar it a little longer, if you can resist.
