Reviews and Ratings

Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A twist on the usual Merlot, made from 85% Merlot and 15% Malbec. Smooth and fragrant with ripe cassis and plum coming through along with touches of chocolate.
Tasted at California Wine Fair, March 2017
Andrea Shapiro rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Merlot Blend from Paso Robles. (75% Merlot/25% Malbec) Medium ruby colour with a garnet rim hue. Ripe red and dark fruit present on the nose here with flavours of strawberries and stewed berries. Dark plum and some dried fruit notes. Vanilla and chocolate. Medium tannin and body. Almost off-dry in sweetness even though it's rated 2g/L, there is some definite residual sugar. A very good example of California Merlot, drink now but can be further aged. A pretty nice fireside sipper. Need a cigar with this one!
Greg Hughes rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

This is an approachable wine from a producer that is especially well known for their impressive arrays of varietal wines from famous viticultural areas across California. They grow in Napa Valley, Monterey, and Paso Robles, which is where this one is from. It's 88% Merlot and 12% Malbec, which gives it a jolt of dark fruit.
Somewhat deep purple with a pinkish rim.
It was more aromatic after a little bit of time open. Initially, it was closed off. Lavender, toasted oak, macadamia nut, damson, and cherry candy.
The flavours are soft and luxurious - not heavy or dense. Lots more plum, smores, cherry, pomegranate, and some smokiness (not too much).
Open this wine up and let it breathe for about 20 minutes. Great wine for portabello mushroom burgers, caramelized onions, and fries. It should be a big hit, this summer, at a barbecue.
Grapes for this Californian red wine were grown in Paso Robles which has warm days and cool nights suited to Bordeaux grapes like Merlot. The wine is a 86% Merlot and 14% Malbec blend giving the plushness of Merlot and the dark, rich fruit of Malbec. It underwent a full malolactic fermentation to soften the wine and was whole-berry fermented then matured for 12 months in American oak barrel, of which 22% was new. Pair with mushroom ragout. J Lohr Vintage 2014, Los Osos,is produced from the winery's Paso Robles vineyards. While mostly Merlot, other red wine grapes include 14% malbec, giving the wine more body and fruit. - Community Wine Reviews
