Delheim Sur Lie Chardonnay 2007, W.O. Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, South Africa: Vintages Wine Panel: Ageing a wine ‘sur lie’ (on its lees) rounds out the wine and adds terrific texture and complexity. (Lees is a nicer name for the spent yeast cells after fermentation is complete.) The aromas here suggest coconut, pineapple, cinnamon, ripe apple and freshly baked bread. On the palate it is dry, round, nicely balanced and beautifully made. Medium full-bodied with a fine, long finish. My note: A rich, creamy Chard with voluptuous notes of ripe apples, peaches, pears and fig. A smoky tinged finish is satisfying and long lasting. 956219 14% D 750 mL $17.95 Score: 88/100.
