A heavily reductive, rubbery, raisined wine in desperate need of some air, so decant long before serving. The wine in any case offers an off-dry impression and abundant oak flavour in a bold and modern style. For the money, this is a smart buy for those who regularly spend $30 on a bottle of over-oaked California or Argentine wine - it certainly has intensity and concentration in spades in a similar flavour register. Tasted April 2015. Value Rating: **1/2

Natalie's Review

Castaño Solanera Viñas Viejas 2012, Yecla D.O.C., Spain: A real stunner for the money! An alluring, seductive nose of stormy black fruit, dried herbs, and wild violets. This wine fills your mind, mouth and senses. It is a limited production wine made in the Yecla region of southern Spain. Highly recommended. Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
