This is such a surprise for me. Up until recently I never drank French wine because I always felt it wasn't full bodied enough. My trusty sommelier slowly introduced me to Gigondas wine...oh yes! I had fallen in love, and then Languedoc wines.....hello!!!!!!! Yum! But Bordeaux....well every Bordeaux I had ever tasted were simply too weak for my tastes. So...here comes the story...my sommelier showed me Bordeaux ..Margaux...oooohhhh and oh, he exclaimed....a Margaux, look, let's be honest with each other , I had no clue what he was talking about....so I frankly relied....but it's a Bordeaux and worse still it's only 12.5% ...I was mortified that he would suggest such a thing.
I'm sure he refrained from rolling his eyes at my ignorance, but he pressed forward......
"Joooooolia...." he is from France! " Do not have pre judgment.....thesis a Margaux!"
Okay I realised that my protests were futile and Margaux andI were going home to spend a Saturday night together!
I decanted the wine but was eager to take a sniff immeadiately. I was quite pleasantly taken aback by the initial note of coffee which slid effortlessly into vanilla and blueberry pie with a woody nutmeg finish. I had a feeling I was going to have to appologise the following week!
On the palate I was introduced to a floral note of crab apple with a refreshing acidity. There were incredible ripe red fruits, red currants, raspberries and delicate red cherries. The fruits parted way to a short burst of animal note which quickly disappeared to release tones of wood and cloves. A subtle white pepper slips into a discreet finish leaving my plate feeling both dry yet invigorated.
I enjoyed this wine with latkes and tarragon fish, it was a perfect combination, and Margaux can join us again any time!
