John Szabo, MS
2011 is a really fine, fleshy, fruity and fresh vintage for this perennial great value wine from north western Spain, displaying all of the depth and richness of old vines mencía, with complexity and length well above the price category. Wood is a minor feature and tannins are soft and velvety, yet still grippy enough to provide great structure. Very good to excellent length. This is fine stuff yet again; consistently excellent. Tasted October 2013. Value Rating: ***

Natalie's Review

Descendientes de J. Palacios Pétalos 2011, D.O., Bierzo, Spain: Founded in 1998 by Alvaro Palacios, one of the most respected winemakers in Spain. A rich, meaty wine of great balance and length. Savory with blackberries and pepper. Full-bodied with an attractive subtle herbal note mid-palate. This wine is made from the Mencia grape, which is called Jaen in Portugal. Lovely dark spices and pepper on the finish. Great for the cellar or enjoy now after decanting for an hour. Top me up! Drink: 2013-2016. 446484 15% D 750 mL  $28.95 Score: 92/100. The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
