Veuve Ambal Brut Crémant De Bourgogne

A.C., Burgundy, France

Reviewed: May 28, 2011

My Review: Veuve Ambal makes some very fine bubbly. Light pear and clover heighten this for me. Sharing much of the same topography, sparkling wines from Burgundy are every bit as good as those of the neighboring region of Champagne, at half the price. A good pop for the buck. (Try their Brute Rosé, fragrant & fruity.) Score: 89/100

Il Clou Di Clavesana Dogliani Superiore 2010

    D.O.C.G., Piedmont, Italy

My Review: The tang of sour cherry, and a lash of spicy leather. Smooth, clean and very well priced, it’s a ripe pick. Well paired against a with a good chicken cacciatore or anything tomato based like pasta or gourmet pizza; but try not to pigeonhole this red. Despite its rustic leanings the Il Clou Dogliani Superiore has enough structure to break out the white truffle oil, balancing that earthiness against a whiff of cigar and well worn leather and a bracing cherry taste. Score: 90/100
