This week I discovered a wine from the island of Sardinia, Italy (Sardegna). I don't know much about Sardinia but what I've learned is rather interesting. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and is located just south of Corsica, in between the west coast of Italy and the East Coast of Spain (practically centered between Naples and Barcelona). It's also close to the North African nation of Tunisia. This area of the mediterranean is steeped in history and very culturally diverse because of it's central location and its role in the spice trade.

The grapes grown on the island are fairly unique and show a lot of personality. This week I'm tasting the Meloni Jaccia - Monica di Sardegna 2010. The Monica grape is considered native to Sardinia but, as I found out through a little research, originally from Spain (which mostly abandoned its cultivation). My first impression was not an overly enthusiastic one as it was a bit tart and sour but once it was left to breathe, it opened up and the taste became pleasing. To the nose, it brings images of farm-life (cattle, lambs and goats). This wine is organic which is a great selling point, in my opinion. This wine should go well with grilled red meats such as beef, lamb or goat!
