Vintages Wine Panel: Viña Mayu is a relatively new winery located in Chile’s most northerly wine region, the Elqui Valley, and this Carmenère is from their debut vintage. Aged in French oak for eight months, this wine shows aromas of smoke, vanilla, cassis, blackberry jam and a hint of bell pepper. It’s dry, medium full-bodied with concentrated ripe black fruit flavors playing contrast to the smoky tar notes. Good length. My note: Dried tobacco leaves, black cherries and spice on the nose. Full-bodied richness and warmth on the palate with a cigar-infused finish.
Carmenère food pairings: barbecued ribs, braised brisket of beef, hamburgers, pepperoni pizza.
