Reviews and Ratings

Douglas McMillan rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

This crisp white has a little of everything. White flowers, green apples, lemons, apricots, saltiness, and a slight touch of Riesling's signature petrol aroma. Its clean, crisp taste is predominantly green apple and lemon and it has great fresh acidity. There's an abundance of excellent pairing opportunities for this wine, from green salads, to fish, to pork, to ... just enjoying a delightful glass of white wine.
Heather Wall - CS; WSET Advanced rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

This is a great value Alsatian noble grapes of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Guwurztraminer, Sylvaner and Pinot Blanc. The result is a pretty dry wine with notes of tree fruit, stone fruit, floral, citrus and honey. There is a good amount of mouthwatering acidity to cleanse and prep the palate for food. A great patio starter wine or pair with sausage, Bratwurst, fish and chips, potato chips. Yum! Serve this light-bodied wine well chilled.

Geoffrey Lindsay reviewed this wine as follows:

Hugel Gentil is a blend of Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewurtztraminer and Muscat from a winery making wine since 1639. If you want to read more about Alsace the Hugels and all the interesting war time intrigues, I highly suggest picking up Wine and War by Don and Petie Kladstrup. The Gentil is a crisp straw colour with the scent of green apples, fresh citrus rind, faint petrol and a little wisp of fish free sea breeze. The fresh, ripe Alsatian acidity is definitely there (a very good thing indeed). The mouthfeel is creamy and viscous with a good slate and mineral note, this wine feels almost like licking wet quartz. The finish is short to medium with a nice crisp finish. Might I suggest Thai shrimp curry with pineapple?
The winemaking region of Alsace in France that borders Germany is renowned for blending several white grapes to create more complex white wines. This is one of the benchmark producers from the region. - Community Wine Reviews
