Fantastic value for this toasty bubbly. Notes of green apples, white peach and wild field flowers. Lovely on its own as an aperitif or drink it with many dishes, from seafood and glazed ham.

Canella San Donà di Piave, Province of Venice Owner: Canella family Winemaker: Lorenzo Canella Established: 1947 Location: San Donà di Piave Province: Venice Website: http://www.canellaspa.it You look around and it’s gently rolling hills bathed in the soft sunlight, luminous colors as if freshly painted by a Renaissance master. If this were a movie, the sound track would be... the Venice-born Vivaldi, allegro con brio. True enough, the world’s most romantic city is some 40 miles south: we’re in the lively heart of Prosecco, a land sung by Dante himself as “joyful and amorous”. The official story of this native grape began in 1800, though a local wine called Pulcino – famed in Roman times – appears to be its distant forebear. Whatever the origin of Prosecco, the soil that nourished it for these past two centuries has blessed it with zest and character in its own likeness! The brand and family of Canella come from the heart of the appellation, and have become almost synonymous with Prosecco itself. Their story began with Luciano Canella in 1947, though Luciano did not actually have a winery of his own until 1950. In the beginning was the family restaurant: Luciano’s father had died when his only son was 10 years old, leaving wife Giovanna and four children. Luciano and his sisters had to learn fast and work hard to help their mother with the numerous patrons of Osteria Dalla Giovanna, in the heart of San Donà di Piave – thriving in spite of the difficulties of wartime. One of the reasons for Giovanna’s success, in fact, was precisely... Luciano. The enterprising teenager was blessed with a keen palate and a dynamic, creative disposition. First he scoured the countryside, hunting for the best wines to match Giovanna’s cuisine. Then he thought of creating his own label and setting up a state-of-the-art winery. Finally, he specialized in a wine that was as joyfully effervescent as Luciano himself. As it turned out, Luciano Canella had the vision and foresight to invest in what would become Italy’s best-selling spumante DOC. The winery founded by Luciano Canella was ideally located near the appellation’s historical nucleus, Conegliano (also a national winemaking landmark thanks to three renowned institutions: the 19th-century Oenological Society of Treviso, the Agricultural Institute of Viticulture and Oenology, and the Institute of Experimental Viticulture). The Canella vineyards were – and still are – at the precise medium altitude where grape-ripening is more gradual, the resulting fragrance more intense and the natural fruit acidity (malic acid) at its distinctive best. The wines of Luciano Canella – soon flanked by wife Renata – met with increasing success, so much so Luciano decided to adopt a distinctive logo for his small, choice range. It was 1955: all Canella labels bore a jolly little waiter in tails reproducing the “C” in Canella whilst holding a Canella bottle. The subsequent 50 years saw the family focus on Prosecco. At the same time, generation number three moved upstage. This consisted of Luciano and Renata’s four charming, brilliant children: Alessandra, Lorenzo, Nicoletta, Monica. In 2005, the Canellas felt it was high time to take their lucky mascot (which had been temporarily discontinued) out of mothballs. The elegant little waiter was revisited by a brilliant new designer, becoming even more unique and recognizable (you can see its reproduction above…). Simultaneously with the “C”-man’s comeback, this joyfully effervescent family chose to celebrate six decades of sparkle with two noble additions.
