This lovely sweet-style Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927 Sherry is not vintage dated but does have some wine from the 1927 vintages blended in. Dark-hued, rich and complex with aromas of fig jam, molasses and espresso. Great dessert wine.

Pedro Ximénez food pairings: blue cheeses, salted nuts, Florentine.

Reviews and Ratings

Sylvain Segard rated this wine as 96/100 with the following review:

Each time I drink a Sherry, I cannot fathom how Spaniards can craft such a complex long ageing wine at such a modest price. And, this splendid Alvear Solera 1027 Pedro Ximenez further compounds the mystery.

This wine is a non-vintage because it is assembled from a barrel ageing system called a Solera, which includes fraction of the wines from each and every vintage created since 1927. The result is a rich, unctuous, dark nectar which smells and tastes of sweet raisins, prunes, ripe figs, salted caramel, walnuts, coffee, and dark chocolate orange peels. Score 96. (Reviewed Nov. 2016)
Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 95/100 with the following review:

A luxurious naturally sweet wine, made from 100% Pedro Ximenex varietal, using the Solera system, in this case, going back to 1927. This wine is made using grapes that have been sun-dried on mats until they become raisins, so a very dry climate is required, such as that of southern Spain. The resulting wine is a dark mahogany colour, has an intoxicating nose of prunes, molasses and chocolate and shows concentrated fruit on the rich palate. Satiny, unctuous with a succulent, very long sensuous finish. Serve this at 10-14C to end a special meal and make your guests supremely happy, either sipped alone or drizzled over vanilla ice cream, fruit salad or with blue cheese. Unforgettable!

Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

This would be a lovely end to any meal, and personally I would substitute dessert for this as a special treat. Made from Pedro Ximenez grapes, dried out to raisin after they have been picked, this Sherry-style wine has a rich beautiful mahogany colour and big flavours to match. Lots of rich fig, dark chocolate and raisin on the nose. I really enjoyed that the sweetness was refined a bit on the palate, so it was not cloying or overwhelming, but nicely balanced. Try as an aperitif or with some blue cheese and nuts.
Pedro Ximénez from Montilla-Moriles' Alvear Solera 1927 is dark, sticky, lush and great over any ice cream, PX also stands up to a rich chocolate moose or ganache, and rich cream blue cheese with fresh fruit. Just be ready for the sugar rush. - Community Wine Reviews
