Keith Robinson reviewed this wine as follows:

2009 Maison Champy 'Les Taillepieds' Volnay Premier Cru

Price: $70

Availability: Liquor Depot

Assessed by: Keith Robinson

Tasted: September 2014

Product Details: Volnay, Burgundy, France 100% Pinot Noir

Volnay is a village in Burgundy, just south of the village of Pommard in the Côte de Beaune. The wines of Volnay are known for being elegrant, fragrant, delicate and seductive. The wines of Pommard are famous as the best reds of the Côte de Beaune, full and sturdy. Volnay = voluptuous. Pommard = powerful. Easy.

The tasted wine is from a single premier cru vineyard in Volnay, Les Taillepieds.

The producer, Maison Champy is the oldest agency in Burgundy, founded in 1720, now owned by Jadot. Farming practices moving to biodynamic with very low intervention.

The tasting: Showing some bronzing on the eye. Delicate, complex perfume with dark fruit, berries and a bit of spice. On the palate, complex, layered, compelling. Texture is silky. Bright, integrated acidity and enough tannin to hold everything up. Leaves the palate feeling fresh and yearning. This wine is very good, seductive. This is not a wine for the head – don't let the complexity get in the way of the pure hedonistic pleasure. Don't let the smooth silky hedonism distract from the subtle complexity. Drink now or age another five years.

Music Pairing: “Famous Blue Raincoat” Leonard Cohen

Book to read with: Twenty Love Poems, Neruda

When to drink: Some wines, they say, tear off your clothes and throw you on the bed. Some wines slowly undress you. Champy Les Taillepieds makes your trembling fingers undress yourself.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
