Montes Alpha Carmenère 2009, Colchagua Valley, Chile: Vintages Wine Panel: The colour is black as a starless night with a hint of purple on the rim. Aromas suggest cherry drops, smoked meat, cigar box, leather, cinnamon toast and cassis. Dry, very impactful wine with a full measure of fruit balanced by generous leather/smoked meat tones. On the mid-palate is where you will find silky tannins for balance. Spicy and generous with a solid finish. Very impressive Carmenère that will reward 2-5 years in a cellar, or enjoy it tonight. My note: Yes, yes, yes! I am referring to the wine: this is simply amazing for the price. The total package. Packed with gorgeously layered fruit yet there’s acidity and elegance. De Martino Legado Reserva Carmenère 2008, Maipo Valley, Chile: Vintages Wine Panel: A truly inviting nose that offers herbal, brambleberry and spice notes wonderfully intermingled with suggestions of rich fruit and cocoa. The palate is dry, crisp, medium bodied, and yet complex and layered too. There is also a sweet fruit centre and an impressive finish. My note: Come dance with me nose! Lusciously ripe blueberries and blackberries leap out of the glass. Full-bodied and smooth with an incredible price point. Drink: 2011-2015. 282615 13.50% XD 750 mL  $15.95 Score: 90/100. Vina Requingua Toro De Piedra Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Curicó Valley, Chile: Vintages Wine Panel: The Curicó Valley’s reputation for producing some of Chile’s best Cabernet Sauvignon is championed by this 2008 offering. Complex aromas including blackcurrant, smoke and raspberry. The palate is dry with a nice depth of flavour. Rich, dense and delicious berry fruit with accents of woodsmoke and supporting tannins. Finely balanced and culminating in a satisfying, medium-long finish. Cellar for 3+ years, or enjoy tonight. My note: Juicy, tasty and mouth-watering. Good structure in this cab which balances the fleshy black fruit. A smoky finish. Amazing price. Drink: 2011-2015. 39362 14% D 750 mL  $16.75 Score: 89/100. November 12, 2011 Best Value Red Wine. Château Canteloup Raoul Fabre & Fils, Prop. Meritage 2004, A.C., Médoc, Bordeaux, France: Vintages Wine Panel: Aromas of leather, earth, smoke, plum and raspberry are prominent. The palate is dry and fruity with very good raspberry and smoky replays. It’s all held together with well-balanced tannins and fresh acidity. Expertly crafted, this wine is ageing well and is an excellent choice for experiencing maturing Bordeaux at a very approachable price. My note: Simple, rustic and ready to drink when you are.
