Lenz Moser Prestige Grüner Veltliner 2012, Niederösterreich, Austria: A refreshing bone-dry wine with zippy notes of limes and white grapefruit. Terrific aperitif. Youthful and invigorating. Lower Austria (Niederösterreich) contains the winemaking sub-appellations of Kremstal, Kamptal and Wachau, among others. This is the winery's flagship Gruner. Château De Gourgazaud Cuvée Mathilde 2011, Minervois, Midi A.C., France: Rustic and full-bodied red wine from southern France. Terrific value, taste and quality for the money! Juicy, full-bodied and packed with blackberry, dark spices and some pepper. Fleshy black plum nuances are ever so tasty. Supple but could still benefit from 1 hour of decanting. The southern French region of Minervois produces consistently ripe, full-bodied reds like this at remarkably great prices. Finishes with dried herbs and mocha. Pair with prime rib. Delaforce Real Companhia Velha Touriga Nacional 2011, Douro D.O.C., Portugal: A full-bodied, generous red wine with mocha and toasty oak on the nose. Black plum and raspberry with dark spices. Good finish on this D.O.C. wine. There's been a revolution in dry red wines from Portugal: try this one and you'll know what I'm talking about. This particular wine hails from a well-known producer of port, the fortified dessert wine. The Touriga Nacional grape offers signature black fruit aromas and richness.
