Mission Hill Family Estate Five Vineyards Cabernet Merlot 2011, Okanagan Valley, BC V.Q.A., Canada: Robust and tannic, needs some cellar time and an hour of decanting. This full-bodied blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is sourced from five vineyards on the winery's estate. Dark fruit, tarry notes and smoky oak. Good with a rare steak. Black Hills Estate Winery Nota Bene 2012, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia BC V.Q.A., Canada: What a blockbuster red wine! Truly a Canadian flagship red blend in the Bordeaux tradition. Tawse Winery Inc. Robyn's Block Chardonnay 2011, Beamsville Bench, Canada: A blockbuster Chardonnay from Tawse, one of Niagara's best producers across a range of wines and styles. The 2011 vintage was challenging but this chardonnay still has voluptuous texture. Lovely aromas of apple, vanilla smoke, toffee, ripe pear, caramel and mixed baking spices on the finish. Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars Reserve Pinot Noir 2011, Okanagan Valley, BC V.Q.A., Canada: Gorgeous cool-climate Pinot Noir! Edgy, fleshy, fun and layers of voluptuous black cherry, earth and mystery. This wine is great even two days after being opened. Superb craftsmanship. Redstone Winery Redstone Vineyard Merlot 2010, Lincoln Lakeshore, Ontario V.Q.A., Canada: Fresh on the nose with an attractive herbal, ripe black plum note. Nice bite and balance on the palate with a full-bodied weight and velvet texture. I don't know how they manage to achieve such balanced ripeness in this cool-climate Merlot, but ask not how they made this wine, ask how soon you will drink it. Merlot food pairings: bacon-wrapped beef tenderloin, lamb & Guinness stew, venison with a chocolate and blueberry reduction. A concentrated blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot of equal parts, 33% each.Classic aromas of cassis and blackcurrant and some herbal notes mid-palate. Decant for 1-2 hours. County Cider Company Ice Cider, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada: Ice cider is made in a very similar way as Icewine is, except cider is apple-based and icewine is grape-based. For this cuvée of blend of cider, the cidery used a mix of frozen Russet, Ida Red and Spy apples have been pressed to produce a sweet and concentrated juice. This is then fermented to create this luscious cider. Gorgeous apple goodness: your mouth waters even smelling this terrific cider. Good balance. Henry of Pelham Winery Baco Noir 2012, V.Q.A., Niagara Escarpment, Ontario, Canada: A medium-bodied red with attractive dark red berry and plum aromas. Round and supple. Henry of Pelham ups its game every year on baco. This is terrific! Quails' Gate Estate Winery Rose 2013, Okanagan Valley, BC V.Q.A., Canada: Lovely and fresh dry rose with aromas of field strawberries. Domaine de Grand Pré Vintner's Reserve Castel 2013, Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, Canada: Full-bodied with tart cherry and cranberry. Lots of mocha, carraway and dark chocolate notes from generous oak aging. Pierre Castel bred this grape by crossing the century-old French grape Cinsault with a native North American from the Vitus Rupestris family. Castel is little known because of its early bud break and is susceptible to late spring frosts. It also ripens early to mid-season and develops a deep purple colour. This robust red wine is made from grapes grown close to Ottawa, a blend that leads with the hybrid grape Marquette at 58%. It's made from native Georgian grapes, Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane. On the nose, aromas of lime zest and lemon, followed by a clean, balanced mouth-watering zestiness on the palate.
