Last summer I had the privilege of getting to know Roland Zimmermann, the 7th generation of vintners. It is a impressive heritage that dates back to 1723 when Kaiser Wilhelm came through Joseph Zimmermann's village in Germany. The king loved Joseph's wine so much he bought and paid for several casks - at a time when kings just took things they liked - and had them sent to his castle.
When I contacted Roland about buying some of his wine for gifts, he invited us into his home and tasting room in his basement. We had a great time! While I tend to buy red wines, he reminded me that vintners equally treasure their whites and reds. His Sauv Blanc is delightful. It has a beautiful dry complexity to it and we bought several bottles of it that day.
