Red Wine

Michel Torino Don David Reserve Bodega El Esteco Malbec 2009, Cafayate Valley, Salta, Argentina: Vintages Wine Panel: Michel Torino has built a solid reputation for producing consistently high-quality Malbec in the Cafayate region in northern Argentina. Some of this up-and-coming region’s vineyards are planted at the highest elevations in the world for viticulture. This juicy wine is bursting with blackberry and other ripe dark fruits, balanced by toasty oak, ripe acidity and friendly tannins. Should drink well over the next 3 years. My note: Especially gorgeous for the price: this has to be an inventory pricing error! This is my new party wine. Wow. Rich blackberry and black plum with mouth-watering juiciness and satisfying full-bodied weight. Pair with: gourmet burgers, sausages. Drink: 2011-2015.  64998  14%  XD  750 mL  $12.95  Score: 89/100. Alamos Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, Mendoza, Argentina: Vintages Wine Panel: Catena Zapata is one of Argentina’s leading producers and its Alamos range consistently offers outstanding value. Expect blackberry flavours aplenty with notes of toasty oak, cocoa and coffee on a long, lingering finish. My note: Year after year, a solid producer of delicious, full-bodied reds at incredible prices. Pair with: gourmet sausages, grilled steak. Drink: 2011-2014.  467944  14%  XD  750 mL  $13.95  Score: 88/100. July 9, 2011 Best Value Red Wine. Full Review

Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Mendoza, Argentina: Dark woodsmoke and blackcurrant and cassis on the nose. A noble and elegant structure and balance and length. August character. Drink: 2010-2014.  985002  14%  XD  750 mL  $19.95  Score: 90/100. June 11, 2011 Full Review

Lan Reserva Tempranillo Mazuelo 2005, D.O.C.A., Rioja, Spain: Mature and classic with subtle notes of dried herbs, leather and dark fruits. I love it because it’s packed with flavour yet so elegant and balanced. I could drink this all night, and in fact, I think I will. Drink: 2011-2015.  42929  13.50%  XD  750 mL  $19.95  Score: 91/100. 7 Deadly Zins Old Vine Michael & David Phillips Zinfandel 2008, Lodi, California, United States: Vintages Wine Panel: It took fruit sourced from seven of Lodi’s premium vineyards, specifically chosen for their superior quality, to create this sinfully rich Zinfandel. Loaded with berry fruit, pepper, spice and earth, this wine is a model of consistency. Mitigate the severity of your transgression (or implicate others as you will) and share this considerable, and decadent, treasure with friends at your next barbecue. Enjoy over the next 3-5 years. My vote: I adore this wine: it’s vibrant, juicy, generous and fleshy rich with blueberries, purple plums, black raspberries. It reminds me of Tina Fey: lively and fun, always ready for a joke as you sit around the barbecue. It’s simply delicious. Pair with: sauce-covered barbecued meats, cheeses. Drink: 2009-2015.  59311  15%  D  750 mL  $24.95  Score: 93/100. May 28, 2011 Top Rated Red Wine. Full Review
