Sangre De Toro

Torres Sangre De Toro Garnacha 2014

Catalonia, Spain
3233 days ago

Geoffrey reviewed this wine:

Torres is a winery that I’m constantly on the lookout for as they do have a good contingent of quality products. The Sangre de Toro is named after my favourite God, Bacchus or for the Greek lover Dionysus, who was known as son of the bull and is the god of wine as well as other less important things. This rose is strawberry red in colour. It is creamy on the nose, quite like strawberries in cream. I really can’t get past the strawberries in cream and would say it smells more of Campino hard candies but orange and grapefruit rind also make an appearance. It is really creamy on first taste, the Campino candies (which really shouldn’t be a tasting note) disappear with a hint of red currant. The finish is sharply acidic with those red currants appearing again. The finish plays out with a good hit of unexpected bitterness. I feel like this is a Rose that could use some age. I’d suggest pairing with a nice oily pink fish grilled and slightly smoked on firewood steelhead trout and don’t forget the lemon.

Hugel & Fils

Hugel Hugel & Fils Riesling 2012

Alsace A.C., France

Geoffrey reviewed this wine:

I like to buy Hugel wines so here is another of my reviews of their wines. The Riesling is an extremely pale straw colour. Petrol, honeysuckle and lemon rind are my thoughts on the first smell. Mineral driven with wet stone, honeydew and cantaloupe, it smells of a summer field after a light morning dew. This has a very good, very strong chunk of acidity. It is all lemon and minerals on the palate. This Riesling is fairly viscous and mouth coating and also very dry. It has a quick sharp finish. This wine drank better on the second night, which leads me to suggest: buy a case and age at least 3 years. This wine is not ye ready but after a little of the acidity precipitates out and the fruit is allowed to shine it will be quite the charmer. I suggest if you must drink it now, as I did, grilled prawns or coconut shrimp are in order.

Geoffrey reviewed this wine:

The wine is deep dark purple red and shows no sign of browning with cherry red around the edge. The first whiff is of cedar, balsa and cherries. Licorice and blackberries and cherries it is faintly earthy with an even fainter hint of eucalyptus. It is all blackberries and cedar on the palate. The wine is definitely still tight. The finish is fairly soft with the tannins taking over from taste and they are very present. I’d love to see what this wine would be like in 2020, I think a revelation would be in store. Currently it’s just too tight but if you’re going to drink it all, as I did, I suggest a dinner of grilled lamb chops and potato salad.

Hugel & Fils

Gentil Hugel & Fils Hugel & Fils 2013

Alsace A.C., France
3233 days ago

Geoffrey reviewed this wine:

Hugel Gentil is a blend of Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewurtztraminer and Muscat from a winery making wine since 1639. If you want to read more about Alsace the Hugels and all the interesting war time intrigues, I highly suggest picking up Wine and War by Don and Petie Kladstrup. The Gentil is a crisp straw colour with the scent of green apples, fresh citrus rind, faint petrol and a little wisp of fish free sea breeze. The fresh, ripe Alsatian acidity is definitely there (a very good thing indeed). The mouthfeel is creamy and viscous with a good slate and mineral note, this wine feels almost like licking wet quartz. The finish is short to medium with a nice crisp finish. Might I suggest Thai shrimp curry with pineapple?

Sofia

Francis Ford Coppola Sofia Rosé 2014

Monterey County, California, United States

Geoffrey reviewed this wine:

Sofia is named after vineyard owner and director Francis Coppola’s very talented daughter. The wine is a hard colour to describe. It is redder then pink with blue and purple highlights, if you don’t believe me go get a bottle and try to describe the colour. On the nose candied strawberries, candied watermelon, juicy fruit and Welch’s grape juice. There are Macintosh apples, strawberries and watermelons on the palate. The acidity is definitely on the lower side, while not flabby it’s fighting that borderline battle. This is a wine to sip on the dock or deck before dinner, or maybe instead of the afternoon coffee.
