Drink Wine and Giggle Gals

Mike Weir Winery Sauvignon Blanc 2010

V.Q.A., Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, Canada

Drink Wine and scored this wine: 85/100

The Drink Wine and Giggle Gals recently dined at Wayne Gretzky's--alas, his Toronto restaurant, not his home--and since Gretzky's winery does not produce sauvignon blanc, we went with another Canadian sports icon, Masters golfer Mike Weir. Reminiscent of a smooth grassy green with hints of sandy bunker, Mike Weir Sauvignon Blanc hit a solid par.

Petrussa Sauvignon Blanc 2011

The Drink Wine and Giggle Gals had tickets for a Pink Martini show at Roy Thomson Hall and needed a pre-concert dinner wine to set the mood (pink martinis would be too obvious). Since our favourite Pink Martini song is Una Notte A Napoli, we chose an Italian white in our favourite sauvignon blanc medley. Boy did Petrussa make our organic baby salad leaves and wild sea scallops sing...delightfully smooth and with enough acidity to tame a shallot vinaigrette, the Drink Wine and Giggle Gals recommend Petrussa for whenever you feel like enjoying a little orchestra in your mouth.

Les Baronne

Henri Bourgeois Les Baronne Sancerre 2011

Sancerre, Loire Valley, France

Drink Wine and scored this wine: 91/100

Finally, the Drink Wine and Giggle Gals found the perfect wine to pair with Carla Bruni's latest album, the elegant, intimate and breathless Little French Songs. Sancerre is sauvignon Blanc of a more restrained variety than the full-frontal fruitidy of the Marlborough New Zealand sauvignon blancs that the Drink Wine and Giggle love so well. Kiwi just doesn't go with Carla Bruni singing... J'aime crever d'espoir au petit matin blême (I like to burst with hope at first pale crack of dawn) Et j'aime quand ça roule quand la houle nous prend l'âme (Like the boat rocking when the swell grips the heart). So beautiful, so crisp, so French.

Villiersdorp Cellar

Slowine Villiersdorp Cellar Shiraz 2009

Drink Wine and scored this wine: 88/100

The Drink Wine and Giggle Gals were lucky enough to slow down and enjoy some Slowine outdoors on a mild Tuesday evening when the weather was finally kind enough to permit. Slowine goes down very quickly and for this we give it high marks. Its marketing is very Eckhart Tolle--Slowine tells us to live now, according to now's rhythms be they fast or slow and implores us to... never hear when you can listen never look when you can see never touch when you can caress and never quaff Slowine when you can sip it--the Drink Wine and Giggle Gals wish they had followed this advice...

Featherstone Winery Gewürztraminer 2012

V.Q.A., Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, Canada
3941 days ago

Drink Wine and scored this wine: 90/100

Sometimes the Drink Wine and Giggle Gals tire of sauvignon blanc as an accompaniment to Ages 8 and Up where we attempt to get crafty with paint-by-numbers, mosaic or papier-mâché art best left to children. Featherstone Gewürztraminer was a lovely change of taste (and heavenly smell). The word gewürztraminer translates from German to "Spice Traminer" or "Perfumed Traminer". Traminer refers to Tramin, the Northern village in the German-speaking province of Northern Italy where the grape was born. The history of the Traminer family, like that of most families, is complicated and features a rather unstable genome. Lynne would like to think that it was an craft-challenged genome that made her papier-mâché dinosaur resemble an unstable duck rather than too much Featherstone Gewürztraminer.
